Berend van der Kolk (1986) is an associate professor at the Vrije Universiteit (VU) Amsterdam, School of Business and Economics, department of Accounting. Berend holds degrees in accounting, philosophy and business administration, and obtained his PhD on management accounting in 2016 from the University of Groningen. After that, he worked at IE Business School in Madrid for five years as an assistant professor. Also, he held visiting positions at the University of Sydney and the London School of Economics.
Berend is interested in performance measurement, ethics, and digitalization, and uses both qualitative and quantitative research methods to study these topics. His research is published in international peer-reviewed journals such as the European Accounting Review, Accounting Education, Health Care Management Review, and Management Accounting Research, and featured in outlets such as the Financial Times, Follow The Money, and The Guardian. He is an editorial board member of the Journal of Accounting Education and the European Journal of Management Studies, and an associate editor of the Spanish Journal of Finance and Accounting. In 2021, he published a Dutch popular science book “De Meetmaatschappij” (The Measurement Society) on the impact of measuring performance on individuals, organizations and society.
